Theatre of Life
Healing Ensemble & Performance Troupe
Documentation by Hop Nguyen, from a practice session for “RainLluvia Performance Prayer” (March 2024)
The Roots
Under the creative vision of Yoli, the Theatre of Life Healing Ensemble & Performance Troupe draws on the Mesoamerican tradition of “Xochitl In, Cuicatl” (“Flower and Song”/ “Flor y Canto”) as a speculative indigenous-futurist performance, prayer, and ritual structure. Inspired by Yoli’s Abuela and re-indigenizing journey, this practice is rooted in Mexican-Indigenous healing traditions and in avant garde performance art practice. Teatro De La Vida, imagines the role of performance where the roads of ancestral arts and healing practices meet performance art and experimental theatre.
The Practice
In Theatre of Life, we come together with our ancestral lineages and wisdom across many diasporas, piecing together our stories to tend to the wounds and disconnection from Land/ Nature and the roots we have inherited.
Inspired by the Nahuatl creative healing practice of “Xochitl, In Cuicatl”, we come to expression, embodied storytelling, and performance art as a living prayer, as an altar moving through time and space and form, as a sentient poem/song, as a metaphor in motion that shapes and heals us as we shape and bring our medicine and essense to it.
Performance as embodied prayer
We all have a role to play, from witness to performer
